"..bravery and loyalty were second to none."

More than half a century later, Filipino soldiers who fought alongside US troops in World War II are getting compensated. $15,000 to those who are citizens now, $9,000 for those who aren't. Not that money is going to make up for what they went through during and after the war but at least they are finally getting something. Imagine risking your life for a foreign country just to be ignored for 60 years? No health benefits for you or your family. No G.I. bill. Nothing except for discrimination because of the color of their skin.



A couple years ago, I went to a local memorial at Bataan Park in Bremerton to remember those who had fallen during the battle of Bataan, Filipino and Japanese soldiers alike. Among a handful of veterans present were wives and families of soldiers. Its nice to think that the ones I met who still have their uniforms and pride are getting some thanks in return.



President Truman said, "The record of the Philippine soldiers for bravery and loyalty were second to none." Although this is coming from the idiot who ultimately denied them all military benefits, the statement is true.
